Mower County COVID-19 case total creeps up on 1,000

Mower County saw a rise of 20 cases over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, going into the three days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday with 932 cases and coming out with 952, according to the Minnesota Department of Health in its daily report Monday.

Statewide there have been 38,569 cases confirmed after 434 news cases were reported Monday, as well as three newly reported deaths. There have now been 1,474 deaths related to COVID-19 with a majority of that number, 1,156, having lived in long-term care or assisted living facilities.

Since mid-March, 4,219 people have required hospitalization; however, the number of those still hospitalized or requiring ICU care continue to go down. As of Monday there were 258 hospitalized and 125 being cared for in ICUs.

Numbers reported in neighboring counties: Dodge (87), Fillmore (30), Freeborn (292), Olmsted (1,129, 15 deaths) and Steele (231, one death)

Across the nation, cases near three million after it was reported that there were 44,361 cases Monday, bringing the total to 2,886,267 cases, according to the Centers of Disease Control. There have been 129,811 deaths.

The United States leads the world in reported COVID-19 cases ahead of Brazil, which has just over 1.6 million cases.
