Letter: Poppe there to help

A short time ago the Minnesota Department of Health provided its daily update of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As of March 22, there were 169 cases in our state. That number is expected to continue climbing in the days and weeks ahead as more Minnesotans are tested. In our region, there are six cases in Mower County, two in Dodge County, and zero in Freeborn County.

The Legislature already took swift action to appropriate emergency funding for our hospitals, clinics, and providers. At the same time, Governor Walz has issued executive orders to address this public health crisis, including the activation of the National Guard.

If we all follow public health guidelines, we can “flatten the curve” and protect our health care workers, senior citizens, and other Minnesotans who are at a higher risk. If we do not, our health care system could become overwhelmed with patients in need of serious medical attention.

If you are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, my office is a resource that is available to help you navigate public agencies that are providing financial support. Email me at rep.jeanne.poppe@house.mn or call 651-296-4193 (please be prepared to leave a voicemail message — staff are tele-commuting in order to comply with public health guidelines).

This is a truly unprecedented situation and we can all do simple things to care for each other. Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Cover your cough with your sleeve and avoid touching your face. Pick up the phone and check on the senior citizen living on your block.

If you know a neighbor, friend, relative, or coworker who would appreciate receiving these emails, please let them know they can subscribe at https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MNHOUSEDFL/subscriber/new?topic_id=MNHOUSEDFL_58.
